Before I talk about my Mom Jewellery I want to Thank my own Mom for nurturing my artistic talent, and for never getting in my way, and always giving me choices even when I didn't know what I wanted. Her answers to my questions never shut the door on thoughts, but rather opened them up to new ones. One of my favourite conversations with her went as follows:
'Mom, people think I'm weird, how can I be normal?'
'Why would anyone want to be normal!?' Why indeed. Thanks Mom!
My favourite part about
being a full time artist, is making jewellery about my life! Since I'm a Mother of two beautiful boys, I love making jewellery about being a
Mom, AND a strong woman. I think that's why Mom's are so drawn to my Mom jewellery, because it captures both the tenderness and strength of Motherhood.
The last piece I’m going to talk about for Mother’s Day is my Custom Portrait necklace. This is just a joy to create every time. It came to life after my first son’s birthday. A good friend of mine from University came to his party, and brought with him this tear jerking portrait HE DREW of my Son! I am tearing up just thinking about it. He’d drawn it from a photo on FB and it was a total surprise to me! The jeweller in me wanted to wear this portrait everywear, so I now offer this custom portrait necklace to all my clients. Now that I have ANOTHER son, I am going to ask him to create a portrait of him for the other side. Currently it has my first son’s ultrasound. Many people get a photo for the other side. And my favourite part is seeing people’s babies immortalized in a portrait created by my good friend Andrew Ferneyhough.
My first ‘Mom’
piece was my Family Heart necklace, which I created shortly after my first son’s birth. I was just brimming with Mommy pride, they say
pregnant women glow, but so do New Mom’s! I wanted something that
every Mom could relate to. So I made the ‘people’ really
simplified, the Baby is like a symbol for a baby. Anyone can see
their family in this piece. I also engraved my Son’s name on the
back and I wore this with pride A LOT as a new Mom. I later created a
custom design with TWO kids and birthstones for a very good Mom
friend of mine.
That’s one of the fun
things about being a New Mom as well. You get so many new friends! I
moved away to Britian to do my Masters after University, and when I
moved back to Canada, all of my friends had moved away.
So even
though I made new friends, I didn’t find new ‘besties’ until I
had kids. Now I see my friends on 3 week cycles because there’s too
many to see in one week!
Another piece I made
for a Mommy friend of mine is this Languages of Mom ring. She speaks
French and English, and her son is starting French Emersion
Kindergarten soon! We are all going through the emotions of having
our first born’s heading to school in the fall. We are all crying
and jumping for joy depending on our mood.

To all the New and Old
Mom’s out there, I hope you had a Happy Mother’s Day. We all know you don’t
really need a day to feel like a Mom. But it is nice to have a day
when we can all reflect on our Mom’s and our children.
All those memories of your Mom reading you stories and singing you lullabies. All those times your little one snuggles into you, or says ‘these flowers are for you Mom!’ and drops half of them as their little hands try to get them to you out of pure joy and excitement.

K I’m tearing up
again. What a softy. I need more sleep. Wait I have a 1 and a 2 year
old, never mind, I’ll just get more hugs.
Happy Mother’s Day.
Rickson

These jewelry works are very luxurious yet heartwarming, and have a far greater purpose as they are made for someone you love. There are many forms for jewelry, and they aren't simply decorative or there to add impact to one’s attire. It can also be a memento, something to remember a loved one by. It’s great that you were able to capture this in your works, and I’m sure your clients appreciate having these options. They would surely make for a lovely gift on special occasions.
